getting here

You can travel to Croatia by air, bus, train, car and/or ferry. Your point of origin may determine how you decide to get here.

croatia. . .
. . . by air

Coming from Ireland, United Kingdom, you'll most likely fly. Coming from North America or Australia, you'll almost certainly fly. London has regular direct flights to Pula. From anywhere else you can fly to a major European city with connecting service to Pula. London is probably the best bet but consider other major cities too. Ireland currently (2 May 2008) has no direct flights to Pula. From North America or Australia, you'd want to get a flight to a city in Europe from which you can find a flight into Croatia.

Another option is to fly to Venice. Venice is less than 300 kilometers from Pula and there is good train/bus/boat service. You could even spend a few days in Venice. There are many direct flights from major cities in Canada and the United States to Venice.

To get to Pula, our location, the distances are reasonable if you fly into the Croatian cities of Pula, Rijeka or Zagreb or into Trieste or Venice in Italy. There are many factors to consider in deciding which airport to fly into: cost of the flight, cost of transfer and ease of transfer among them.

Scuba Croatia offers transfers to your accommodation from transportation centers in Pula, Rijeka, Trieste, Venice and Zagreb.

. . . by train

Train service to Zagreb and Venice is good from most of Europe although it's usually more expensive than flying. Train service to Pula is very inconvenient so we don't recommend it. If you like traveling by train, consider going into Zagreb and letting us provide transfer from there to Pula.

Trains are available from London>Paris>Milan>Venice. London>Paris is Eurostar; Paris>Milan is TGV; Milan>Venice is Trenitalia.

Train service from Venice to Trieste is fantastic, frequent and cheap. Consider this route with Scuba Croatia transferring you from Trieste to Pula.

. . . by bus

There is good bus service from Venice to Trieste and Venice to Pula, more frequent in high season. If this alternative appeals to you, let us know and we'll provide you with the schedules.

. . . by car

Getting here by car is easy. You can take autoroutes from anywhere in Europe. The road from Italy through Slovenia to Croatia is not an autoroute and is a little tricky but very doable. Once you get to Croatia, the road improves again. It's a new limited-access highway although it only has two lanes.

Note that both Austria and Slovenia require purchase of a toll sticker for travel on their autoroutes. Austria purports to provide notice of the required sticker in English with the words "obligatory vignette." Of course, this conveys no meaning to English speakers so watch out. Fines for noncompliance are hefty. Stop and buy one as soon as you enter the country.

. . . by ferry

In Spring through Autumn there are several ferries from various Italian ports to various Croatian ports including several here in our region. They're somewhat spendy and take a while but if you're up for it, it's a beautiful way to travel. Ask us for information. One of the biggest lines is Venezia Lines. Check them out.

The point is, it can be fairly easy to get here. If all of the above sounds confusing, don't be put off. We'll explain it, and it really isn't bad at all. It does take some planning though.
